And while keeping up with these fads, Baker & Baker also introduced a number of firsts to local folks: The Rubaiyat watch, which later became Bulova; engagement/wedding rings with matching side designs; the first waterproof watches of the 1930s; the first self-winding watches of the 1940s; and the first air-conditioned store downtown.
Also, Baker & Baker became the first jewelry store in the state to have two representatives on the Board of the Ohio Retail Jewelers Association. Current owner Larry Hall, is Mariettas only Certified Gemologist Appraiser, which is the highest diploma obtainable in the jewelry trade. It encompasses the latest industry developments and information required to provide customers with accurate and knowledgeable service.
Baker and Baker has been through the Great Depression, five years of
World War II and lots of changing times. The business continues to
change with the times, recently expanding the repair shop to the third
floor with new state of the art equipment and while you wait repairs
in some cases. They've also added over 25 feet of new showcases in the
last few years thus adding hundreds of new products. (back to history)
